Microteaching Exercise: HOW TO TIE A TIE
Bridge: (hook or introductory activity)
- draw attention to beautifully tied tie and outline why I learned how to tie ties
- History of ties: traced back to 1600's when Croatian merchants wore knotted neckerchiefs which fascinated the French, combined Croatian and French word for Croats
Hrvati + Croates = Cravat
- Generally considered men's formal wear: well tied tie shows finesse and sophistication
- Avril Lavigne popularized wearing of ties amongst teenage girls
Teaching Objectives: (objectives for developing teaching skills)
- to practice the BOOPPPS system of preparation and teaching
Learning Objectives: ("SWBAT" what the student should be able to do after the lesson)
- students' will be able to outline a brief history of the tie and demonstrate the steps to tie a Half-Windsor Knot, a Full-Windsor Knot and a Pratt Knot (time-permitting)
Pre-test: (assess students' prior knowledge and skills)
- ask if students have had prior experience tying ties; what knots do they use most commonly
Participatory Activity: (activity that promotes learning)
- materials: 6 ties, 6 handouts (outlining tie tying techniques)
- demonstrate and have students practice:
Half-Windsor Knot (2 min)
Full-Windsor Knot (3 min)
Pratt Knot (3 min - time permitting)
Post-test: (assessment of student learning)
- check to ensure that students have satisfactory knots
